Light the charcoal disc and wait about 5 minutes until it is covered in a light grey ash before you place any chips — bare red charcoal burns the chip in seconds with sharp smoke. Place one or two chips on top and let the scent fill the room. Close the doors and windows while burning so the fragrance stays in, and keep the mabkhara away from the fan for a fuller scent and a slower burn. Store the jar in its own box, away from heat and moisture.

Scenting clothes, hair and fabric: hold your clothes over the rising smoke for a few seconds up to a minute — never too close, so you avoid burn marks. For hair, gently wave the smoke toward you and let it settle. The trail stays on abayas, curtains and bedsheets for hours.
